Leaders of the ruling Awami League and the BNP yesterday again engaged in a war of words over the brutal assassinations of August 15, 1975.
Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said on Tuesday that the BNP was spreading false and misleading information over the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
On Monday, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, secretary general of the BNP, said that Awami League men had been involved in Bangabandhu’s assassination, but the government wanted to tarnish the image of BNP founder General Ziaur Rahman.
At a press conference from his official residence on Tuesday, Obaidul Quader said: “Their comments are similar to the proverb - a guilty mind is always suspicious.”
He added that the people now know the beneficiaries of Bangabandhu’s assassination; they know who became the army chief, the role of Zia, to whom the killers reported after staging the carnage, and Zia’s reaction at that time.

“Why will we tarnish Zia’s image? In the course of time, history itself fixes the positions of respective persons through analysis. It is not possible to turn a villain into a hero of history,” Quader said.
Chhatra League helps jobless people
To mark the month of mourning, the Bangladesh Chhatra League started distributing food packages among the jobless people in the capital.
On Tuesday, BCL workers handed out food packages to more than 100 people at Panthapath in the capital.
Talking to Dhaka Tribune, General Secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee said that the BCL had figured out eight places in the capital where the day labourers gather early in the morning so that they could be hired.
“But during this lockdown, many of them are not getting work. So, we are distributing food packages among them on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to ensure their food safety,” Lekhak said, adding that the organisation would continue this food distribution.
