Covid-19: Bangladesh records 22 deaths, 1,235 new cases in 24hrs

Bangladesh has logged 22 deaths and 1,235 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours till Wednesday morning.

With the new cases, the total number of cases on Saturday surged to 512,496 according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With the 22 who died from the disease in the same period, taking the overall tally to 7,531. 

Of the total samples tested, 8.11% tested positive, whereas 15.94% cases were detected from the total tests conducted so far, added the release.

Deceased

Among the total infections, 88.99% patients have recovered, while 1.47% died since Bangladesh detected its first three Covid-19 positive cases on March 8. 

Of the 22 victims, 16 were male, six female and all of them died in the hospital.

Of the total deceased 11 were aged above 60, six were above fifty, four were above 40 and one above 30 the press release said.

The division-wise data shows that 11 deaths took place in Dhaka division, five in Chittagong, two in Mymensingh, one each in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, and Sylhet.

Among the total 7,531 deaths, 4,129 deaths occurred in Dhaka division, 1,407 in Chittagong division, 433 in Rajshahi division, 530 in Khulna division, 237 in Barisal division, 291 in Sylhet division, 338 in Rangpur division, and 166 in Mymensingh division.

Recovery

The recovery count rose to 456,070 after another 1,507 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the period.

A total of 15,229 samples were tested at 163 authorized laboratories across the country during the time.

A total of 3,214,344 samples have so far been tested since the detection of the first Covid-19 cases in the country.

The DGHS said in order to make treatment facilities easily available for the Covid-19 patients, the government has introduced round-the-clock telemedicine services, comprising 100 physicians, in the country.

A total of 665,895 people have so far received healthcare services from telemedicine.

The DGHS said 23,275,689 people received healthcare services from hotline mobile numbers and health web portals as the government formed a group of medical professionals to provide emergency healthcare services.

Global Situation

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,799,337 lives and infected 82,439,376 people across the world till Wednesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 58,445,663 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 218 countries and territories across the planet.
