Covid-19: 32 more die in Bangladesh, another 1,470 test positive in 24 hours

Bangladesh has registered 32 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours until Monday morning, taking the number of total fatalities to 7,312.

The country also logged more than 502,000 coronavirus cases with 1,470 people testing positive over the same period.

With the latest figure, the number of all confirmed cases so far jumped to 502,183, according to the daily virus update released on Monday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).  

Of the 32 deceased -- 23 men and nine women -- 15 were from Dhaka division, eight from Chittagong, three each from Barisal and Sylhet, and one each from Rajshahi, Khulna, and Rangpur divisions.

Among the victims, 30 died at different hospitals and two at home. 

So far, 5,575 men (76.24%) and 1,737 women (23.76%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.46%.             

The DGHS said 15,409 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.

As many as 15,669 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 160 authorized labs — government and private — across the country and 1,470 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 9.38%.

To date, 3,091,349 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 16.24% so far.   

The health authorities said 2,167 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 439,694 patients — 87.56% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,700,961 lives and infected 77,234,607 people across the world till Monday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 54,142,748 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 218 countries and territories across the planet.
