Bangladesh has confirmed deaths of five more Covid-19 patients, including a child, in the last 24 hours, taking the country's death toll to 145.
Besides, another 418 people tested positive for the deadly disease over the same period, pushing up the total number of confirmed cases to 5,416.
Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Additional Director General (Administration) Prof Nasima Sultana revealed the latest figures during a daily online briefing on the coronavirus situation from Dhaka on Sunday afternoon.
She said, as many 3,680 samples were collected in the last 24 hours and of those 3,473 were tested.
A total of 46,589 samples have been tested so far, she said.
Nasima said 25 centres are now testing samples for determining the disease. The newly centres include Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and Kushtia Medical College, while M Abdur Rahim Medical College in Dinajpur started its work on Sunday.
On April 24, Bangladesh recorded the highest single day cases from coronavirus infection as 503 people tested positive in the previous 24 hours.
The DGHS official said among the five deceased -- three men and two women -- four were from Dhaka city and one from Dohar under Dhaka district.
Among the dead, a child, who was suffering from kidney problems (Nephrotic syndrome) and later contracted Covid-19, was aged below 10 years.
Of the rest, one was aged above 60, and three others were aged 51 to 60, she said.
On April 20, the death toll from coronavirus infection crossed the 100 mark in Bangladesh.
On April 17, the country recorded the highest deaths with 15 more fatalities from the pandemic announced by the World Health Organization (WHO), since the country declared its first death on March 18.
In the briefing, Nasima said nine more individuals have recovered from the disease, taking the number of total recoveries to 122.
"These nine individuals took treatment in hospitals. Although most of the infected are taking treatment from home and being cured, they are not being included in the list."
She said 75 people have been put in isolation in the last 24 hours, and the number now stands at 1,164.
"A number of 2,891 people have been put in home and institutional quarantine over the same period, taking the number of quarantined individuals to 177,031."
She said 601 institutions have been prepared for institutional quarantine with the capacity of serving 30,635 people at a time.
The DGHS official said the government has collected 1,534,321 personal protective equipment (PPE) so far and of those 1,280,038 have been distributed.
She also informed that the country is witnessing no shortage of testing kits at the moment.
Nasima said a total of 414 Bangladeshi migrants underwent screening at airport, land port, and seaport in the last 24 hours.
On March 8, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first case of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2 that broke out in China's Wuhan in December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 203,596 lives and infected 2,931,787 people across the world till 3:15pm on Sunday, according to worldometer.
As many as 838,853 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 210 countries and territories across the planet.
