Bangabandhu-1, our space odyssey

Bangladesh has many things to take pride in. In 2018, Bangladesh became eligible for graduation to be a developing country status. And tonight, a satellite that belongs to the country has been sent to space.

A Block 5 Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida carrying the Bangabandhu-1 to space.

Once it reaches 119.1° East longitude, the satellite will provide direct-to-home (DTH) services, video distribution, and very small aperture terminal (VSAT) communications across Bangladesh. However, it will take at least three weeks for the satellite to be fully effective as ground controllers calibrate it for use.
