The house of Tamim Hawlader, one of the three men arrested in connection with the murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo, was set ablaze by a mob on Wednesday evening in Madaripur.
Local sources reported that a group of unidentified individuals attacked Tamim’s family home in Brahmandi village under Jhaudi Union in Madaripur Sadar Upazila and set fire to the property. Fire service officials responded promptly and brought the flames under control. No casualties have been reported.
Confirming the incident, Adilur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station, said: “Police rushed to the scene as soon as we received the report. The fire has been doused, and the situation is now under control.”
Tamim, 30, was arrested early Wednesday along with two others—Palash Sardar, 30, of the same village, and Samrat Mallik, 28, of Shashikar village in Nabagram Union under Dasar Upazila. All three are originally from Madaripur.
Shammo, a student at the Institute of Education and Research (IER) and a resident of F Rahman Hall, was fatally stabbed on Tuesday night near the hall premises. He was a student of the 2018–19 academic session and hailed from Ullapara Upazila in Sirajganj.
His elder brother, SAM Shariful Alam, filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station shortly after the incident.
According to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), CCTV footage and digital tracking were instrumental in locating the suspects. They were arrested in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area within hours of the crime.
Police sources revealed that Samrat worked variously as a day labourer, while Tamim and Palash ran small businesses on the footpaths of Dhaka.
