At least 20 people were reportedly injured in a clash between the students of Comilla University (CU) and police during the Bangla Blockade program in Comilla on Thursday.
The confrontation took place around 3pm near the Ansar camp in Kotbari.
As per their previously announced program, the students attempted to take out a procession near the Ansar camp. The police intervened, stopping them around 3pm. An argument ensued, escalating into a clash between both parties. The police then opened fire, causing the protesting students to scatter and seek cover in nearby bushes.
At least 20 people, including student Anon Majumder and three policemen, were injured. The identities of the other injured individuals are yet to be confirmed.
In response, students have taken to marching on campus and surrounding areas, creating a tense situation.
CU student Sahab Uddin said: "The police attacked our peaceful program without any provocation. Students will not accept this."
Comilla’s Kotwali Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Feroz Hossain said that the police are in the field to maintain a peaceful environment and will not allow any disturbances on the highway.
The students have been protesting for the last few days, demanding the abolition of quotas in government jobs.
On Wednesday, the High Court upheld the circular to reinstate the 2018 quota system. However, the students rejected this and continued to demand the passage of a law in parliament to abolish “discriminatory quotas”.
