It was eight years ago on July 1 that our country experienced one of its darkest days in recent years, with the gruesome militant attack at Holey Artisan Bakery that left 22 people dead. It was the harshest of wake-up calls for us to erase militancy from within our borders.
Unfortunately, despite law enforcement’s claims that militant organizations have been driven into a corner, concerns remain - and rightfully so. Several militant outfits continue to operate online, and we have seen the devastating consequences of complacency when it comes to dealing with militants of any kind.
Yes, our law enforcement agencies have made commendable progress in cornering these nefarious elements in the physical realm but it would be foolish to say that our fight against extremism is over. The ability of groups like Neo-JMB, Ansar al-Islam, and Hizb ut-Tahrir to adapt their strategies and exploit online platforms for propaganda and recruitment is a clear and present danger to our national security and social harmony.
As such, we expect our law enforcement to be the pro-active ones and attempt to wipe out any traces of militant activity in the country. In addition, we must also invest heavily in cybersecurity measures and foster closer cooperation with international partners to stay ahead of the evolving tactics employed by militant groups. Simultaneously, we must redouble our efforts to promote digital literacy and critical thinking skills among our youth, empowering them to recognize and reject extremist ideologies online.
The complete eradication of militant influence is a necessary element for safeguarding the future of our nation. There is no prosperity for Bangladesh if we cannot keep our people safe from extremist ideologies.
