Authorities concerned have ordered a freezing of the  bank and beneficiary owner (BO) accounts of Matiur Rahman, a former member of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), and all members of his family.

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) of Bangladesh, established to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, instructed all banks and non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs) to freeze the bank accounts belonging to Matiur Rahman and members of his family.

Additionally, it has asked for relevant information regarding their accounts.

A BFIU official confirmed this information on Tuesday.

A letter has already been sent by the BFIU to all banks, NBFIs and mobile financial services regarding the directive to provide necessary information such as account opening forms, KYC (Know Your Customer) details, and transaction histories within the next five working days.

Additionally, instructions have been given to freeze the bank accounts of Matiur and his family members, including his wife and eight children, for the next 30 days.

Besides, the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) ordered the Central Depository Bangladesh Limited (CDBL) to freeze the BO accounts of Matiur and his family members.

Among those named on a freezing of their bank and B/O accounts are Matiur Rahman, his first wife Laila Kaniz, their daughter Farzana Rahman Ipsita, their son Ahmed Taufiqur Rahman, his second wife Shami Akhtar Shibli, their daughter Eftima Rahman Madhuri, their son Mushfiqur Rahman Iffat, and another son Irfanur Rahman Irfan.

Notably, Matiur Rahman was previously president of the Customs, Excise and VAT Appellate Tribunal of the NBR and former managing director of Sonali Bank.

When allegations of misconduct against him arose, he was relieved of his duties at the Customs, Excise and VAT Appellate Tribunal and subsequently attached to the Internal Resources Division of the Ministry of Finance.

Later, he was also relieved of his position as managing director of Sonali Bank.

Furthermore, following allegations against Matiur Rahman on June 4, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) formed a three-member inquiry committee to probe the allegations..

The ACC has already commenced the investigation into allegations of misconduct and illegal acquisition of property against Matiur Rahman.
