The sudden erosion of the Shitalakshya River due to heavy rainfall over the past two days has resulted in the collapse of five houses in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur.

This erosion has put 50 houses, including a madrasa and an Eidgah field, at risk.

Local residents are in a state of panic due to the sudden erosion.

Hena Begum, Masud Mia, Rafiqul Islam, Babul Mia, Akkas Ali, and Kiran Mia,  who have lost their homes, are now forced to live under the open sky.

In this situation, it has become challenging for them to spend their days with their children under the open sky.

Babul Mia, a victim of the erosion, said: "I never thought my home would be washed away by continuous heavy rain. I had only one house, and that too had been swallowed by the river. Now I have no place to stay."

Local residents said that the sudden heavy rainfall over the past two days caused erosion in the riverside area, and within moments, five homes were engulfed by the river.

Five families have become homeless, and their water sources, including submersible tube wells, have also been lost to the river. The lack of safe drinking water poses health risks for family members.

Kapasia Upazila Parishad Chairman Advocate Amanat Hossain Khan and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) AKM Lutfor Rahman have inspected the affected area.

The chairman said: "We will discuss with the relevant authorities to take necessary measures to assist the affected people and prevent further erosion."

The UNO said that discussions have been held with the executive officer of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) of Gazipur,, and they will send a team as soon as possible to take necessary measures to prevent further erosion.

According to local residents, if the erosion is not quickly controlled, at least 50 more houses will be swallowed by the river, and the Eidgah field and madrasa building are at the greatest risk.
