A police constable was killed and two pedestrians were wounded when another policeman opened fire near the Palestinian embassy in the capital's Baridhara.
The incident took place around 11:45pm on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Monirul.
Both the policemen were on duty in front of the embassy, said Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun around 2:30am on Sunday, after visiting the spot.
Police detained Constable Kawsar Ahmed in connection with the shooting. The area was later condoned off, he added.
“No matter who committed the crime, there is no scope for exemption. We are interrogating the accused. Efforts are underway to find out why such an incident occurred,” the IGP added.

Police recovered 20 rounds of Chinese bullet casings from the spot.
Monirul’s body has been sent to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. The injured are undergoing treatment at United Hospital.
In this regard, Gulshan police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mazharul Islam said Constable Kawsar was "mentally stressed."
Additional security ensured
Security has been strengthened in the diplomatic zone since the incident.
Anyone entering the Baridhara area is being thoroughly searched.
Several teams of police including the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), SWAT have been deployed in front of the Palestinian embassy.
