  • Forest Department also rescued 18 deer in critical condition
Update : 31 May 2024, 10:20 PM

Members of the Forest Department recovered 15 more carcasses of deer from different areas of the Sundarbans on Friday. With this, 111 dead deer were recovered from the Sundarbans in six days.

Mihir Kumar Doe, conservator of forests for the Khulna region confirmed this information.

Besides, carcasses of four pigs were recovered from several areas including Kotka, Kochikhali, Karamjal, Pakhi Char, Dimar Char, Shelar Char and Narikel Baria till Friday afternoon, indicating a great loss to wildlife.

The Forest Department also rescued 18 deer and one python in critical condition. After giving first aid, they were released into the forest.

Meanwhile, the Forest Department has begun assessing the extent of the destruction caused by Cyclone Remal.

Mihir Kumar Doe said that the Sundarbans faced an unprecedented situation this time after the cyclone and said: “Cyclone Remale resulted in successive high tides, causing all the rivers and canals in the Sundarbans to overflow and flood vast areas of the forest. The height of these tides was between 10 to 12 feet. The tidal water created by the storm surge spread deep into the Sundarbans, causing the deer to float. However, they could not swim to the shore. It is believed that the deer may have died as a result. He mentioned that the initial infrastructural damage to the Forest Department amounts to Tk6.27 crore.

"Forest department members are still conducting a search in the forest. The search will be completed within days. After that the chance of finding a wildlife carcass is very low.”
