The Khulna division has experienced severe devastation from Cyclone Remal, resulting in a loss of over Tk289 crore in the agricultural and fisheries sectors.
Localities, including croplands and fish enclosures, have been flooded due to a tidal surge.
A total of 13,796 farmers in the division have been affected, with crops worth Tk42.98 crore damaged.
According to the Khulna Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Khulna, the cyclone affected 17,796.50 hectares of land in the coastal region of Khulna.
Of these, 15,378.20 tons of crops on 1,068.40 hectares of land were damaged.
Of the total damaged cropland, the affected areas include 54.50 hectares of Aush paddy seedbed lands, 1,752.50 hectares of Aush paddy cultivated lands, 1,447 hectares of jute cultivated lands, 5,755 hectares of vegetable farming lands, 21 hectares of tomato lands, and 485 hectares of sesame farming lands, according to officials.
Additionally, 270 hectares of mug dal (pulse) farming lands, 175 hectares of green chili farming lands, 33 hectares of ginger cultivated lands, 203 hectares of turmeric, 1.50 hectares of maize, 1,705 hectares of mango, 77 hectares of litchi, 118 hectares of watermelon, 310 hectares of papaya, 545 hectares of banana, 877 hectares of betel leaf, 72 hectares of sugarcane, 3,750 hectares of Bona Aman, and 115 hectares of other croplands have been affected.
Meanwhile, fish, shrimp, and crabs from 3,600 ponds and 9,115 enclosures have been inundated with saline water, leading to losses of Tk245.95 crore.
According to the Khulna District Fisheries Office, fish resources across 38 unions in six upazilas of Khulna -- Koyra, Paikgasa, Dakop, Batiaghata, Dumuria and Rupsha -- have suffered due to the impact of Cyclone Remal.
A total of 3,078 tons of fish worth Tk66.25 crore, 2,564 tons of shrimp worth Tk114.68 crore, 636 tons of fries worth Tk20.57 crore, 102.20 tons of crab worth Tk18.63 crore, 20 boats, trawlers and other vessels worth Tk20 lakh and infrastructure worth Tk 6.11 crore were damaged.
Kazi Jahangir Hossain, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension, Khulna, said the final report of the total damage in the Khulna division has been prepared and sent to the higher authorities.
The cyclonic storm Remal, which made landfall in Bangladesh's coastal area on Monday, has so far claimed 10 lives.
Additionally, 150,457 houses were damaged during the storm, with 35,483 houses fully damaged in 107 unions and 914 municipalities.
Nineteen districts have been affected, including Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Jhalakathi, Barishal, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Barguna, Bhola, Feni, Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Narail, Gopalganj, Shariatpur, and Jessore.
