Valiant freedom fighter and veteran parliamentarian Moinuddin Khan Badal passed away in the early hours of Thursday. He was 67.
Badal, executive president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), was undergoing treatment at Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences at Bengaluru, India.
“He breathed his last around 5:30am,” said his cousin Md Ibrahim Chowdhury.
Badal had suffered a stroke two years ago and also had cardiovascular problem, he said adding: "On October 18, Badal went to India for treatment."
Badal, hailing from Boalkhaliupazila, is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.
As per the decision of the family members and the last wish of the deceased, Badal will be buried beside his parents’ graves in Saroatoli village of Boaklhali upazila, his cousin Shamsul Huda Chowdhury Saiful confirmed it to Dhaka Tribune.
The plane carrying his mortal remains will land at Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka at 10:00am on Friday, he said.
Later, his body will be taken to the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad for his first namaj-e-janaza.
The second namaj-e-janaza will be held at Chittagong Jamiatul Falah Mosque on Friday.
The third namaj-e-janaza will be held at Boalkhali Gomdandi Pilot High School premises at 10:00am on Saturday.
His fourth will be held at Ibrahim Nur Md High School premises on Saturday.
Badal took active participation in the Liberation War in 1971. He played an important role in forming AL-led 14-party alliance.
A pall of gloom descended on the political arena of Chittagong soon after the news of his death spread.
A three-time elected MP from Chattogram-8 (Chandgaon-Boalkhali) constituency, Badal was a member of the standing committee on Liberation War Affairs in the 11th parliament.
Badal had a reputation as a great orator in the parliament.
He was involved with Chhatra League during his student life. He played a key role in resisting the offloading of firearms at Chittagong port during the Liberation War.
PM mourns death of Badal
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of the veteran parliamentarian.
In a condolence message, she recalled with profound respect the outstanding contributions of Badal to the great Liberation War in 1971.
“The nation has lost a patriotic and dedicated politician at his death and the people will ever remember this leader who played an active role in all progressive movements of the country,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.
