National sports awardee and renowned athletics coach Shamima Sattar Mimu passed away on Friday night at her Dhaka residence, leaving the country’s sports community in mourning. She was 66.
The former athlete died of cardiac arrest at around 11pm. Mimu played a pivotal role in the development of athletics in Bangladesh, serving as an executive committee member of the Bangladesh Athletics Federation (BAF) and as deputy director (training) at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP), where she helped groom young sporting talents.
Beyond her administrative roles, Mimu was active as a coach and judge in numerous national and international athletics competitions and programs. Her contribution to sports, particularly athletics, will be remembered with deep respect.
The BAF president, general secretary, executive committee members, officials, coaches, and athletes expressed profound shock at her passing and prayed for her eternal peace while conveying sympathy to her family.
Other sports federations, including the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), Bangladesh Basketball Federation, Bangladesh Wushu Federation, and Bangladesh Archery Federation, also expressed deep grief. In a condolence message, BFF president Tabith Awal and senior officials extended heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.
The Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) mourned her death, with president and Army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman and secretary general Jubaidur Rahman Rana noting that the country’s sports arena has lost a skilled organizer and dedicated sports personality.
The Bangladesh Sports Journalists Association (BSJA) also expressed sorrow, highlighting that the nation had lost a committed former athlete, organizer, and athletics promoter. They prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed condolences to her family.
