Comfort food in winter is deeply emotional

Update : 18 Dec 2025, 12:00 PM

Winter does not just arrive with a change in weather, it reshapes our memories around food.

Comfort food in winter is deeply emotional. In Bangladesh, winter comfort food has a character of its own. Seasonal vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, peas and beans dominate home kitchens.

Simple yet satisfying dishes such as mixed vegetables, khichuri, and pitha become staples.

Here are some of the most common winter foods that we find in most homes and streets of the country during winter.

Khichuri

Khichuri is one of Bangladesh’s most beloved winter comfort foods. Made by cooking rice and lentils with seasonal vegetables and spices, it becomes especially popular during the colder months when the body craves hearty, filling meals.

Winter khichuri — often prepared as bhuna khichuri — is richer and more flavourful, commonly served with beef or chicken curry, fried eggplant, pickles, and green chilli.

Pitha

Winter is the season of pitha. These traditional rice cakes are more than just food; they are symbols of celebration and togetherness. From bhapa pitha and chitoy pitha to patishapta filled with coconut and jaggery, pithas bring sweetness and warmth to winter evenings. Often enjoyed with cups of steaming tea, they turn ordinary gatherings into beautiful moments.

Mixed Vegetable

Mixed vegetable is a staple winter dish in Bangladesh, made with a colourful combination of seasonal vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, carrot, beans, peas, and potatoes.

Often served with rice or roti, mixed vegetable is valued for its balance of flavour and health, making it an everyday favourite in Bangladeshi households during the winter months.

Tea

Tea is a favourite in Bangladesh and an essential winter comfort. From roadside stalls to household kitchens, steaming cups of milk tea, spiced tea, or lemon tea are a common sight during the winter months.

Beyond warmth, tea serves as a social ritual — paired with snacks like pitha or biscuits — making it a beautiful part of Bangladeshi winter culture.
