The government has directed that all universities in the country remain closed from Monday until the Eid holidays in order to save electricity and fuel.
To implement the government directive, the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the chairman of the Bangladesh Accreditation Council have been asked to take necessary steps.
On Sunday, the Ministry of Education requested the University Grants Commission and the Accreditation Council to implement the directive in line with instructions from the Cabinet Division.
According to the directive, saving electricity and fuel at the national level is necessary to tackle the current global crisis. For this reason, officials and employees at all public and private universities must ensure responsible and energy-efficient behaviour.
In accordance with the Cabinet Division’s instruction and considering the holy month of Ramadan, all public and private universities will remain closed from Monday until the dates specified in their academic calendars for the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. All universities have been asked to comply with this directive.
The instructions include:
- (a) Avoid using electric lights during the daytime when sufficient natural light is available; use natural light by keeping windows, doors, or blinds open.
- (b) Use only half of the existing lighting and avoid unnecessary lights.
- (c) Switch off unnecessary lights, fans, air conditioners, and other electrical equipment during office hours.
- (d) Maintain air conditioner temperatures at 25 degrees Celsius or above.
- (e) Turn off lights, fans, air conditioners, and all electrical equipment when leaving office rooms.
- (f) Stop unnecessary lighting in corridors, staircases, washrooms, and similar areas.
- (g) Use energy-efficient equipment.
- (h) Ensure all electrical devices (lights, fans, computers, printers, scanners, air conditioners, etc.) are turned off after office hours.
- (i) Avoid all decorative lighting.
- (j) Limit the use of vehicles.
- (k) Use fuel sparingly.
