The High Court on Wednesday issued a rule questioning the cancellation of the nomination papers of Monira Sharmin, joint convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and candidate of the 11-party alliance for a reserved women’s seat in the 13th National Parliament.
The court asked why the cancellation should not be declared illegal.
A bench led by Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order after hearing her petition.
Senior Barrister Mustafizur Rahman Khan, Advocate Mohammod Hossain Lipu and Advocate Muzahidul Islam Shahin appeared for the petitioner.
Earlier on May 4, another High Court bench declined to hear the petition challenging the cancellation of her nomination papers. The bench of Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice Fatema Anwar expressed inability to hear the matter.
The Election Commission (EC) had upheld the returning officer’s decision to cancel her nomination papers, prompting the writ petition in the High Court.
Meanwhile, Nusrat Tabassum took oath on Wednesday, completing the swearing-in of all 50 reserved-seat MPs.
