EC invites Reza Kibria to register Gono Odhikar Parishad

Gono Odhikar Parishad's documents were deemed accurate in an initial verification by Election Commission in April

Update : 06 Jul 2023, 11:24 PM

The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday sent a letter to Dr Reza Kibria, the expelled founding convener of Gono Odhikar Parishad, inviting him to register the party.

The letter calls the convener, member secretary and office secretary of the party to meet the Election Commission's re-verification committee at 3pm on Monday.

The letter, signed by Election Commission Deputy Secretary and Convener of the re-verification committee Abdus Salam said: "The appointed committee formed by the Election Commission will re-verify the information regarding the functioning of the central office and the central executive committee of the political party Gono Odhikar Parishad and other issues on July 10. The convenor, member secretary and office secretary of the concerned party are directed to be present along with necessary information at the stated date and time.”

Regarding the letter, several party members said that due to the disagreement between the top two leaders, one faction expelled the convenor Dr Reza Kibria and made the joint convenor Rashed Khan the acting convenor.

Hence, on Tuesday Reza Kibria in a letter to the chief election commissioner (CEC) asked to ignore all the documents of member secretary Nurul Haque Nur, submitted for registration.

Earlier in April, the Election Commission found the documents of 12 political parties seeking new registration accurate in the initial verification. Gono Odhikar Parishad is among the 12 parties.

Reza Kibria was removed by a faction loyal to Nur on June 19. The next day, he sacked Nur and announced the name of a new member secretary.

The feud ensued after Nur made some complaints against Reza Kibria on June 18, accusing him of working against the party's interest and trying to divide the BNP.

Later on, Reza Kibria denied the allegations and accused Nur of having links to Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, unethical financial transactions and abuse of power.

The party was formed on October 26, 2021, three years after the activists came to light by spearheading a movement against quota system in government jobs. Recently, the party was shortlisted by the Election Commission.
