The death toll resulting from the floods in Hebei province, situated in northern China, has surged to 29, according to reports from state media on Friday. The region has been battered by unparalleled rainfall over the past few weeks.

Citing local authorities, state broadcaster CCTV stated that as of August 10, a total of 29 individuals had lost their lives due to the calamities in Hebei Province. Among these, six individuals were formerly reported as missing. Presently, 16 people remain unaccounted for.

Earlier this week, authorities disclosed that a severe rainstorm and floods that struck Beijing at the end of the previous month resulted in the deaths of at least 33 individuals, including two rescue workers. Additionally, torrential rains in northeastern Jilin province claimed the lives of more than a dozen people last week.

The aftermath of the catastrophic floods was visibly evident in parts of Hebei, which shares a border with the capital city. When visited by AFP on Wednesday, streets in some areas were still muddied and mired. Local residents were tirelessly engaged in salvaging waterlogged belongings and repairing the destruction inflicted upon their homes.

Around the world, millions of people have been impacted by extreme weather events and prolonged heatwaves in recent weeks, occurrences that scientists assert are being intensified by the effects of climate change.
