West Bengal governor resigns

Update : 30 Jun 2014, 11:17 AM

West Bengal governor MK Narayanan has resigned on Monday.

Quoting home ministry sources Times of India reported.

The resignation came weeks after Union home secretary Anil Goswami had telephoned some of the Governors, appointed by the previous UPA regime, to step down after the Narendra Modi government assumed charge.

Nagaland governor Ashwani Kumar, Uttar Pradesh governor BL Joshi and Chhattisgarh governor Shekhar Dutt have put in their papers in the last few days.

The CBI on Friday had questioned Narayanan in connection with the Agusta Westland VVIP chopper scam in what turned out to be the first ever questioning by the agency of anyone holding a gubernatorial post.

MK Narayanan was the national security adviser at time of the chopper deal.

He had presided over a meeting which made changes to technical specifications for VVIP Choppers.

All the four governors who have resigned so far are either former IPS or IAS officers.

Sources said the government was considering appointing some BJP veterans as governors in around ten states.
