Ten people were killed and at least 30 others injured when a tourist bus turned turtle and the container of a heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) fell on it 700 metres outside the tunnel of the Khambatki ghat on the Pune-Satara road on Monday night, reported The Times of India.
Four other vehicles were also damaged on the highway, police said.
The incident occurred at around 10:30pm when the bus heading to Gujarat overturned, apparently while negotiating a sharp gradient.
When other vehicles stopped to rescue the passengers trapped in the bus, a speeding container dashed into four vehicles causing a pile-up.
The rescue operations are over and the injured were rushed to Khandala primary health center and a private hospital in Shirval, said Khandala police inspector Shridhar Jadhav.
Only last month, nine people were killed when the container of an HCV fell on their tempo at the same spot. Two of the deceased in that accident were from Pune.
Inspector Shridhar Jadhav of the Khandala police station said all the bus passengers were Gujaratis who were travelling from Kolhapur in the direction of Pune. While the bus had a Gujarat registration number, it was not immediately known where it was headed to.
