Death verdict: Assam mum on Barua

Update : 30 Jan 2014, 02:34 PM

The government of Assam denied a formal reaction to the death sentence of ULFA commander in-chief Paresh Barua in the 10-truck arms smuggling case.

Assam State Home Secretary GD Tripathy said he was aware of the verdict, Mizoram-based MizoNews reported on Thursday hours after the verdict.

“However, we are yet to receive official communication in this regard,” he said. “I can comment only after I receive formal communication.”

Paresh Barua, leader of the faction of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), is currently on the run and is one of India’s most wanted militants.

He along with 13 others, including Bangladesh’s former junior home minister Lutfozzaman Babar and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Motiur Rahman Nizami, were given death in one of the 10-trucks arms haul cases.
