India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted a remand note to a trial court seeking judicial custody of Sanjay Roy, the lone suspect arrested in the R G Kar Hospital rape-murder case.

The remand note, presented on Friday, makes no mention of "gang rape" or the possible involvement of more than one person in the crime that took place on August 9.

The parents of the victim, a postgraduate medical student, have alleged that their daughter was gang-raped before being murdered, suggesting the involvement of multiple perpetrators.

They have filed a petition with the Calcutta High Court seeking a "court-monitored probe" into their suspicions.

Sanjay Roy, a traffic police volunteer in Kolkata, has been remanded to judicial custody until September 6 by the trial court.

He has been taken to Presidency Jail, where he will be kept in solitary confinement under round-the-clock manual and CCTV surveillance, according to officials.

The CBI's First Information Report (FIR) submitted to the trial court cites sections 64 (which prescribes a jail term of 10 years to life for rape) and 103 (1) (which prescribes a life term or death for murder).

The agency has stated that it may add or remove penal sections depending on the progress of the investigation.

The CBI took over the investigation from Kolkata Police on August 13 and has since submitted a status report to the Supreme Court. An updated report is scheduled to be filed by September 5.

On Friday, Roy was brought to Sealdah Court amid heavy security. The entrance to the court premises, located near the busy Sealdah railway station, was cordoned off, and access from the station side was sealed.

A large contingent of 80 police officers stood guard as more than a dozen CBI officers accompanied Roy to the court.
