Pakistan has expressed solidarity with the people of Bangladesh amid ongoing protests and unrest.

According to a statement from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “Pakistan has conveyed its support following the departure of Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina from the country after weeks of turmoil,” Dawn reported on Wednesday.

The statement read: “We are confident that the strong spirit and unity of the Bangladeshi people will lead them to a harmonious and prosperous future.”

It further states Pakistan’s hope for a “peaceful and speedy return to normalcy" in Bangladesh after the recent period of intense protests.

Hasina resigned as prime minister on Monday and fled the country in the face of massive protests. This led to the dissolution of parliament by the president the next day, with an interim government headed by Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus set to take over soon.
