Bangladeshi monk dies in Sri Lankan

A Bangladeshi Buddhist monk who was beaten in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo and remained hospitalised for about a week and succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

“I heard yesterday (Wednesday) that the monk had died Tuesday night at a hospital,” Bangladesh High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Md Sufiur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune over telephone today.

“So far I know he was beaten and became hospitalised few days back,” he said.

When asked about his details, he said he was busy with SAARC Finance Ministers’ meeting and would be able to provide details by Friday afternoon.

“I could not attend the office due to the ongoing finance ministers’ meeting and I am yet to get the details. I would be able to give you a clear picture tomorrow afternoon,” he said.

UNB reports, citing Sri Lankan media, that the victim was identified as Ven Tilton Barua, 28, who was living near the temple.  

Colombo National Hospital officials said the Buddhist monk was in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital with severe head injuries, according to colombopage.com.

An unidentified group beat the monk with clubs on August 20 when he was at a temple in Rajagiriya, a suburb of Colombo.

Welikada police are investigating the incident. However, no arrest has been made so far for the assault.
