Monsoon rains have wreaked havoc across India, leading to over 140 fatalities reported in several states.
Heavy rains have resulted in significant loss of life and property damage. There are fatal lightning strikes, while the flood situation remains dire, with the death toll steadily rising.
Flooding in Assam’s Nagaon district remains the worst. The death toll from this year’s flood in this region has reached at least 84, affecting nearly 79,000 people, including 20,612 children. The deluge has flooded 184 villages and covered 18,231.8 hectares of crops in six revenue circles, Times of India reports.
Many residents have been forced to live in makeshift tents on embankments as their homes remain underwater. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports that approximately 1.44 million people across the state are still affected by the floods.
As for the capital Delhi, which recently faced a water shortage, is now dealing with flooding in the Bawana area due to a breach in the Munak Canal. This rupture caused water from the Western Yamuna Canal to overflow into surrounding areas, The Economic Times report.
Authorities are working on repairs, expected to be completed by this afternoon, and have diverted water to another canal branch to reduce the flooding.
Following recent heavy rains that disrupted life in Mumbai, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall with strong winds along the Konkan coast until July 15, according to The Indian Express.
In Uttar Pradesh, at least 38 people lost their lives due to lightning strikes during heavy rains that caused flooding and disrupted normal life. Pratapgarh town reported the highest casualties with 11 deaths, followed by Sultanpur with 7, and several other districts with varying numbers of fatalities. Many victims were struck while working outdoors or seeking shelter from the rain.
In Himachal Pradesh, heavy monsoon rains since June 27 have claimed at least 22 lives in various incidents, with $20.6 million worth of damage reported. The casualties included drownings, falls, electrocutions, and snakebites, with two individuals still missing, NDTV reports.
Several roads across Mandi, Shimla, and Kangra districts have been closed due to the weather conditions.
