At least nine people were killed and several injured as a bus caught on fire in Haryanastate of India.

The incident took place around 1:30amon Saturday, in Nuh, Haryana with the bus carrying approximately 60 passengers, mostly pilgrims.

Of the deceased, six were women, and three were men, India Today reports.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. "The ill-fated bus was returning to Punjab when it suddenly caught fire," stated a police official.

An elderly woman, who escaped the fire, said: "I heard a sound from under the bus. I thought the vehicle was plying on an elevated structure on the road; hence it made the sound. However, later there was a smell as well. A biker who was behind the bus for several kilometres overtook and came to the front, and told the driver that the bus had caught fire. I was sitting in one of the front seats, so I jumped.”

Despite efforts from bystanders, including a shop owner who attempted to rescue trapped passengers by breaking windows, the fire became too fierce.

The police said the matter was under investigation.
