The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has strongly denied a media report that it issued a "secret memo" to its missions in North America in April, seeking "concrete measures" against Khalistan movement leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was shot dead in June this year.
"We strongly assert that such reports are fake and completely fabricated. There is no such memo," said ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, adding that the report was part of a sustained disinformation campaign against India.
"The outlet (The Intercept) in question is known for propagating fake narratives peddled by Pakistani intelligence. The posts of the authors confirm this linkage," said the official.
"Those who amplify such fake news only do so at the cost of their own credibility," he added.
In September, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the allegation of a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani extremist Nijjar on Canadian soil on June 18.
