Indian police have arrested four young men in West Bengal for the gang rape of a Bangladeshi teen lured to India under the guise of employment opportunities.

The incident took place on Thursday night in the Montopla village of the Bagdah police station area, located in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

The arrestees are identified as Sanaj Bairagi, Promoth Mandal, Hiro Das, and Pradeep Biswas, all hailing from Bagdah region.

According to police sources, intermediaries (often referred to as brokers) in Kolkata had promised three Bangladeshi teenagers employment opportunities in India.

Initially, a Bangladeshi intermediary managed to smuggle them across the border.

After crossing the border near Bagdah on Thursday night, they were handed over to an Indian intermediary.

The same night, they were sheltered at an isolated poultry farm in the Helencha area of Bagdah.

They were assured that arrangements would be made for their employment in Kolkata. Trusting the intermediaries, the three teenagers took refuge in the Bagdah region.

During the night, the Indian intermediary and his three associates gang-raped one of the teenagers. Hearing her cries, locals informed the Bagdah police station.

On arriving at the scene, police rescued the three Bangladeshi teenagers.

A formal complaint was lodged at the Bagdah police station on Friday afternoon. Acting on the complaint, police arrested the four accused.

Legal proceedings against them have been initiated, police said.
