Indian railways’ ambitious plan to link Mizoram to Myanmar gains momentumAs part of the Act East Policy, Indian Railways is gearing up to establish a rail link to the Myanmar border in Mizoram. Recently, the Railway Board granted approval for the Final Location Survey (FLS) of the 223 km stretch between Sairang (Aizawl) and Hbichhuah in Mizoram, situated near the Myanmar border.

Given the strategic significance of this area and its potential for economic growth, the Ministry of Railways has taken the decision to undertake this project, according to a press release from NFR (Northeast Frontier Railway).

This ambitious endeavor will create an additional access point to Northeast India through Hbichhuah, which is anticipated to reduce both the cost and time of transporting goods from the Sittwe Port in Myanmar to the Northeastern region.

Notably, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, recently inaugurated the Sittwe Port in Myanmar.

At present, NFR is actively engaged in constructing a 51.38-km-long broad-gauge railway line project connecting Bairabi and Sairang, with progress proceeding briskly. Furthermore, the final location survey for the 111 km long Imphal – Moreh railway line connectivity project along the Myanmar Border is also on track for completion in the near future.

This proposed new broad-gauge railway line is poised to significantly bolster trade connectivity and strengthen ties between India and Myanmar and across the wider region, official sources have affirmed.
