India rocket fails to put satellites in right orbit in debut launch

The satellites are no longer usable, says ISRO

India's new rocket that launched on Saturday failed to put its satellite payloads into the intended orbit due to a sensor issue.

The two satellites are no longer usable, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said.

They also cited that the overall objectives of the mission were not met, reports NDTV.

"SSLV-D1 placed the satellites into 356 km x 76 km elliptical orbit instead of 356 km circular orbit. Satellites are no longer usable. Issue is reasonably identified. Failure of a logic to identify a sensor failure and go for a salvage action,” the space agency tweeted.

Previously, ex-chief of ISRO Dr Madhavan Nair had said the mission was a complex one and that the findings of the operation could be known in a few hours.

The rocket, Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), was carrying Earth Observation Satellite-02 and a co-passenger satellite AzaadiSAT.

These were developed by a student team named “Space Kidz India”.

This organization aims to provide government school students with a basic understanding and knowledge of space.

The 112-foot-tall (34 metres) SSLV lifted off from Satish Dhawan Space Centre on India's southeastern coast on Saturday at 0348 GMT and 9:18am.
