Six men with high scores in the English proficiency test IELTS failed to speak English in front of the US court.
They were caught while trying to trespass in the US from Canada using a boat in March, reports Indian media outlet NDTV.
The arrestees are aged between 19 to 21. They were caught while trying to cross the Saint Regis river in Akwesasne, said Inspector Bhavesh Rathod from Mehsana police's Special Operations Group (SOG).
Inspector Rathod clarified that all of them scored 6.5 to 7 in their IELTS and still they needed a Hindi translator to speak before the court.
IELTS is a reliable English proficiency test for the non-native students who are trying to pursue higher studies in English speaking countries.
The incident has shocked the general people on the internet and may have a negative impact on the students who are genuinely trying to pursue their higher studies abroad by proving their English proficiency through this test.
Police informed that these students attended the exam on September 25 in the previous year at south Gujarat's Navsari town.
According to NDTV, the CCTV cameras of the exam hall were switched off during this incident and the agency owner has been asked to come before the police for further investigation.
