Amid the uproar centering on the controversial remarks over Prophet Muhammad by a ruling party leader of India, al-Qaeda warned of several suicide attacks in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai and New Delhi.
In a statement on Monday, the global terror outfit said they are ready to blow themselves up in the four locations to "fight for the dignity of our Prophet.
It went on saying: "Saffron terrorists should now await their end in Delhi and Bombay and in UP and Gujarat.
"They shall find refuge neither in their homes nor in their fortified army cantonments. May our mothers be bereaved of us if we do not avenge our beloved Prophet."
This comes as anger in the Middle East spread Monday over comments about the Prophet, with various countries summoning New Delhi's envoy and a Kuwaiti supermarket removing Indian products.
Comments by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokeswoman Nupur Sharma describing the Prophet's relationship with his youngest wife have sparked a furore among Muslims.
Sharma's remarks during a televised debate last week were blamed for clashes in an Indian state and prompted demands for her arrest.
Al-Qaeda in the statement made available by the SITE Intel threatened: "We shall kill those who affront our Prophet and we shall bind explosives with our bodies and the bodies of our children to blow away the ranks of those who dare to dishonor our Prophet.
“... [They] shall find no amnesty or clemency, no peace and security will save them and this matter will not close with any words of condemnation or sorrow," it added.
The threat statement mentioned "Hindutva terrorists occupying India" and said "we shall fight for the dignity of our Prophet, we shall urge others to fight and die for the honour of our Prophet."
Modi's party, which has frequently been accused of acting against the country's Muslim minority, on Sunday suspended Sharma for expressing "views contrary to the party's position" and said it "respects all religions."
Sharma said on Twitter that her comments had been in response to "insults" made against the Hindu god Shiva.
The group is believed to have members in the country.
