Covid: India clears clinical trials of nasal booster shots

This will be the world's first nasal booster shot

Update : 30 Jan 2022, 05:41 PM

The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) on Friday approved the world's first nasal Covid-19 vaccine as a booster shot in India.

The Bharat Biotech’s intranasal Covid vaccine candidate “Chimpanzee Adenovirus Vectored Covid Vaccine (BBV154)” was cleared for clinical trials.

The permission has been given for nine locations in India, including Pt BD Sharma Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), UHS, Rothak, Haryana, AIIMS New Delhi and AIIMS Patna.

On January 27, the DCGI gave the nod to Bharat Biotech to conduct a phase-3 randomised multi-centric clinical study to evaluate the immunogenecity and safety of its intranasal vaccine as a booster dose on participants.

The Hyderabad-based company said the nasal vaccine stimulates immune responses on the nose and effectively prevents infection and transmission of the coronavirus.
