India has registered more than 3,17,000 Covid-19 cases during the last 24 hours, a new high in the third wave, taking the country's total caseload to over 38.2 million.
According to the union health ministry data released on Thursday morning, a total of 491 people died due to the lethal virus during the period which in turn pushed the country's total fatality to 4,87,693.
In the global tally, India became the second-worst Covid-19 affected country after the US.
India had recorded nearly 2,83,000 fresh cases on Wednesday with 441 deaths.
Thursday’s data said the overall count of highly infectious Omicron variant reached 9,287 with 29 states reporting the new strain.
The active cases have risen to 19,24,051, the highest in 234 days, and now comprise 5.03% of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate has decreased to 93.69%.
The daily positivity rate was recorded at 16.41% while the weekly positivity rate was 16.06% in the country.
