A man accused of raping and killing an eight-year-old girl in an Indian village has been beaten to death.
Mithun Hansda died after he was tied up and beaten by a group of locals near the city of Dumka, Jharkand, reports the Independent.
The victim went to attend a wedding in the nearby village of Jalwe with a few other girls, and the group was allegedly accosted by Hansda when they were bathing in a nearby river.
While the others managed to flee the scene, a drunken Hansda allegedly abducted, raped and killed the girl before dumping her body in the river bank, as reported by India Today
The girl's family began to search for her and eventually found the body. Enraged locals then tied Hansda to a tree and beat him to death.
Video footage shows the accused with his arms tied behind his back and being dragged by a woman holding a long rope, while two other women beat him with large sticks.
Hansda reportedly confessed to the crime prior to his death. Police later arrived and took both bodies into custody, ANI News reported, before releasing them to their respective families, following an autopsy.
"We have taken the bodies into custody, but so far it has not been confirmed if the girl was raped," Deputy Superintendent of Police Roshan Gudiya said.
