Update : 21 Feb 2021, 03:26 PM

A man has gunned down seven people and injured 14 others in broad daylight before he was killed by locals in the Punjab province of Pakistan.

The incident took place at a bazaar in Pul Sheikhani locality of the Shah Sadar Din area in Dera Ghazi Khan district on Sunday, reports The Express Tribune.

Fear and panic spread among the people during the mayhem while a large contingent of police cordoned off the area after the suspected attacker was killed.

Around 11:30am, an armed man covered by a shawl suddenly pulled out a Kalashnikov and began firing indiscriminately in all directions from the roundabout of the local bazaar, leaving seven people dead and 14 others injured.

Being informed, Rescue 1122 and police teams rushed to the spot.

Amid reports of retaliatory firing, local people attacked the assailant with bricks and sticks, killing him on the spot.

However, a police spokesman said the assailant was killed in a police operation.

The injured were taken to Shah Sadar Din and Dera Ghazi Khan hospitals.

According to local sources, the attacker named Ghulam Farid was suspected to be linked to a gang of criminals called the Ladi gang.

A few days back, the brother of the attacker was tortured by Ghulam Haider and Manzoor Hussain Lashari --who were killed in the firing -- over a monetary dispute.

They said the assailant continued to search for his brother’s other opponents after firing on Haider and Manzoor, while continuing to shoot people indiscriminately.

The police said they were continuing their investigation into the incident.

Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

He said that the miscreants who opened fire did not deserve any mercy.
