Most of the patients are elderly and children

Update : 06 Dec 2020, 07:07 PM

Health and medical experts in India’s Andhra Pradesh state were on tenterhooks as a group of people from different parts of the state’s West Godavari district were hospitalized with symptoms resembling epilepsy, the Times of India reported.

According to the newspaper, 228 people have been hospitalized. What has baffled doctors attending them is that the patients are not related and belong to different areas of Eluru – a town of West Godavari. They did not even participate or attend a common event.

Seventy patients have been discharged while 76 women and 46 children are undergoing treatment in different hospitals. Notably, most of the patients are elderly and children.

A medical expert team visited Eluru and inspected the cases to diagnose the problem. Blood samples of the patients have been tested and all reports are normal.

State Health minister Alla Nani, after visiting the hospitals, said on Sunday, "Covid tests were conducted on the patients and all reports are negative."

The minister also added that 150 beds in Eluru and another 50 beds in Vijayawada are ready to deal with emergency.

"There is no threat to life and public should not worry about it as government has been taking all necessary measures. Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy is personally monitoring the situation," he added.

He also directed the district medical and health officer to conduct a door-to-door survey of the affected areas and keep emergency medicines available. Special medical camps will also be set up in the town and a health teams will inspect whether the foods or water consumed by the affected persons were contaminated.

District medical and health officer K Sunanda said all patients presented with symptoms like falling down suddenly, frothing, and shivering. Stating that the affected people recover all of sudden and again present themselves with the symptoms, she said there is no threat to any of them.
