BJP Assam unit President Ranjit Dass came out in defence of the party’s president, Amit Shah, a day after the latter vowed to weed out infiltrators from Kashmir to Kanya kumari and Kohima to Kutch.
Ranjit Dass stated that Amit Shah did not refer to those 4 million people whose names did not figure in the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) list.
“Instead, he was talking about infiltrators in general, who have been living in the country,” Dass told reporters in Guwahati on Monday.
“During the erstwhile Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, several statements were made in the Indian parliament saying that there were 4 to 8 million infiltrators in Assam. Our president was referring to those statements,” Dass said.
“The NRC updating process is still going on. So we cannot term anyone as an illegal infiltrator until the process is over,” Dass added.
While addressing a party workers meeting in New Delhi on Sunday, BJP President Amit Shah said: “Those left out of the NRC have no place in India.”
The final draft of the NRC list, which excluded 4 million of the applicants, was published in Assam on July 30 this year.
