Ahead of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly polls slated at the end of 2018, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) General Secretary Ram Madhav on Wednesday stated that the northeast Indian state could emerge as a major trade hub once the government’s “Act East Policy” is in place.

“As Mizoram is sandwiched by Bangladesh and Myanmar, it could become a major trade centre in the Northeast. If we are voted to power, we will establish a dry port in Mizoram and set up a direct trade link with Chittagong,” he said.

Madhav was interacting with the youth at Hotel Regency in Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital city.

Apart from this, the BJP general secretary accused the state’s incumbent Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla of wallowing in corruption.

“Lal Thanhawla promised that he would terminate corruption. But in reality corruption is rampant,” Madhav said.

“He (Lal Thanhawla) has centralized corruption. Further he and his younger brother were siphoning off government funds according to their whims and fancies,” he alleged.

Madhav promised his party would make Mizoram a corruption-free state if elected to power.

Mizoram is hitherto the sole state in Northeast India where the Congress is in power. It also shares a 180 km border with Bangladesh.
