Nalin Kohli: BJP would fight Mizoram election on development issue

The assembly elections are due in the state by end of this year

A senior national leader from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the party would fight the Mizoram Assembly elections on development issue on Saturday.

BJP National Spokesperson, Nalin Kohli also hoped the Northeast Indian state is moving away from the National Congress Party which ruled Mizoram. Kohli hoped Mizoram will also join Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development agenda.

The assembly elections are due in the state by end of this year.

Kohli was speaking to reporters at another northeaster state Meghalaya’s capital, Shillong, on the sidelines of the BJP Meghalaya State Executive meeting held.

“Sikkim belongs to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) fold. Therefore, the North East has moved away from the Congress and the indications of Mizoram certainly do not bode well for the aforesaid party itself,” he said.

“Congress is ruling for a while there. But looking at the trend of the rest of the Northeast Indian states, the BJP has been voted in power by them. Precisely, the BJP is holding power in six Northeastern states. And certainly, it is not good news for the Congress by any stretch of the imagination.”

“Facts prevail. How many times ministers in the Congress regime at the Centre used to visit the Northeast? And how many times do ministers during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s regime visit the region?” Kohli lobbed the question as a sign of comparison between the previous and present regime in India.

“Development is our agenda. In the six states, we reached out to the people with this agenda. We’ll do the same in Mizoram,” he added.

In other Northeast Indian states like Tripura, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur, the BJP is heading coalition governments. While in Nagaland and Meghalaya, BJP is coalition partner of governments ruled by other parties.
