Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, on Wednesday, reiterated that the State Government would ensure that no genuine Indian citizen would be excluded from the final updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) list, and at the same time, names of no foreign national would be included on it.
He was addressing crowds in Assam on the occasion of India’s 72nd Independence Day, on 15 August. He spoke at Khanapara Veterinary Play Ground in Guwahati—the main celebration venue.
“It was only the draft NRC that had been published on July 30, 2018 and excluded genuine citizens, [they] are being given ample scope to get their names registered on the final updated list,” said the Assam chief minister.
He also lauded the efforts of 55,000 government employees who were involved in preparing the draft NRC, as well as about 70,000 police personnel deployed to maintain law and order across Assam, in the wake of publishing theNRC.
Discussing the issue of infiltration from Bangladesh, the chief minister stated that his government has taken stern measures to seal the Indo-Bangla border effectively—to ensure that no fresh infiltration takes place.
