About 150,000 people, whose names were included in the first draft of Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC), published on December 31, will be excluded from the final draft scheduled to be published on July 30 — NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela told reporters on Wednesday.
After the publication of the first draft last year, the names of 65,694 persons featuring on it were found to be inadmissible during the family tree verification process, Hajela said.
It was also found that the names of another 19,783 persons were included by mistake, the NRC coordinator said, adding that more such cases might come up during the final quality control checks.
The names of 48,456 married women, who had provided certificates from the Panchayat to prove their citizenship, were also found to be inadmissible.
“More inadmissible names may come up during the final quality control checks, but those likely to be excluded would get an opportunity to file claims and objections after the publication of the final draft,” Hajela further added.
“Our efforts are to make the NRC as error free as possible,” he said.
Meanwhile, a meeting concerning the law and order situation of Assam post-NRC chaired by India’s Home Secretary, Rajib Gauba, was held in Delhi on Wednesday.
The meeting was attended by Assam’s Chief Secretary TY Das, Director General of Assam Police Kuladhar Saikia, and other officials.
At the end of the meeting, Saikia said, “Stringent action will be taken against those intending to foment unrest in the wake of the NRC update. The contingent situation post-NRC was discussed threadbare. To tackle any possible untoward situation, we’ve urged the Centre to deploy paramilitary troops.”
Saikia added that the central government would deploy the troops demanded by the state government.
