Tripura’s Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Debbarma has been elected from the Charilam assembly constituency unopposed.
The constituency was supposed to go for polls on March 12.
Previously, polls were deferred in Charilam constituency owing to the death of sitting CPI-(M) legislator Ramendra Narayan Debbarma on Februaray 11. Thus, Tripura had 59 out of overall 60 seats in the polls.
BJP fielded Jishnu Debbarma as its candidate in Charilam.
However, CPI-(M) State Secretary Bijan Dhar announced the withdrawal of their candidate’s nomination on Saturday at the party’s headquarters in Melarmath.
He said: “We are withdrawing our candidate’s nomination for the Charilam polls that was scheduled to be held on March 12.”
When asked about the reason behind the decision, Dhar said: “We’ve sent complaints on various issues to the state election commission. However, the complaints have never been addressed in any form.
“As we realized that the polls would not be conducted in a free and fair manner, we decided to withdraw our candidate’s nomination.”
