Biplab Deb takes oath as Tripura’s chief minister

Update : 09 Mar 2018, 03:20 PM
Biplab Deb has taken the oath of office and secrecy as the chief minister of India’s northeastern state Tripura. Deb was administered by the state’s Governor Tathagata Roy. Jishnu Debbarma was sworn in as the deputy chief minister and home minister. BJP’s ally in Tripura, Indigenous People’s Front of Twipra (IPFT) President N C Debbarma was sworn in as a cabinet minister. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by the likes of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP National President Amit Shah, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and other BJP leaders. BJP stalwarts like Lal Krishna Advani (India’s former deputy prime minister) and Murli Manohar Joshi (former union minister of India) attended the swearing-in ceremony. Former Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar was also present at the event. Traditionally, the oath-taking ceremonies used to take place at the Raj Bhavan (governor’s house). However, this time the venue was the historic Assam Rifles ground – where Indira Gandhi, then prime minister, announced the conferment of statehood to Tripura on January 21, 1972. BJP's arrival in Tripura following the electoral victory is being seen as a humiliating defeat for the unchallenged 25-year rule of the Left Front, writes NDTV. Biplab Deb is the first BJP chief minister of Tripura.
