Nigerian president hails Bangladesh for sheltering Rohingya refugees

Update : 30 Sep 2017, 09:33 PM
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has praised the government of Bangladesh for providing shelter to the people displaced by the ongoing persecution and ethnic crisis on the Rohingya population in Myanmar, reports Nigerian daily The Nation. Barrister Abdullah Mukhtar Muhammad, chairman of National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), conveyed President Buhari’s message. He said Bangladesh’s initiative for sheltering the refugees and providing them with humanitarian aid and assistance shows that the country's government respects human lives and dignity of the helpless. The exodus began since Rohingya militants attacked police outposts on August 25, which led to a renewed security crackdown in the Rakhine state of Myanmanr. According to UN, so far around 500,000 have fled to Bangladesh, taking shelter in Cox’s Bazar. The NAHCON chairman further delivered the president’s appreciation and commendation on the matter, during a meeting with Muhammad Maqsudur Rahman, the counsellor of Bangladesh Hajj Office on Friday at the NAHCON headquarters in Makkah. During their meeting, both the NAHCON chairman and Counsellor of Hajj also agreed on the shortages of facilities and congestions experienced by the pilgrims during the Hajj pilgrim, and therefore agreed to ensure a stress-free Hajj for its pilgrims and reduce the overbearing pressure on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in the coming years.
