Assam Police have sounded high alert along the bordering areas with Bangladesh in the wake of the exodus of Rohingyas from Myanmar to Bangladesh.
Assam Police’s Additional Director General of Police (Special Branch) Pallab Bhattacharya said: “There has been no report of any exodus of Rohingyas from Bangladesh in the past two weeks, but we are on alert for such a kind of situation.”
“We have already alerted the district police of Karimganj, Cachar, Hailakandi, Dhubri, South Salmara district regarding the Rohingya issue and discussed it with top officials of Border Security Force (BSF) and other security agencies,” added ADGP Bhattacharya.
Recently, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs of India Kiren Rijiju said Rohingyas are illegal immigrants and need to be deported as per law.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), nearly 300,000 Rohingya refugees have entered Bangladesh since the latest military crackdown which began in Rakhine two weeks ago following a series of attacks on Myanmar law enforcement by insurgents.
