Modi's BJP set for defeat in crucial Bihar election

Update : 08 Nov 2015, 09:17 AM

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party has appeared headed toward a major defeat in the crucial state elections, a political blow that could make it harder for the government to move ahead with its economic agenda.

A loss would dent the powerful image of Modi, who has built a reputation as India’s most popular national leader in decades, reports the World Street Journal.

He has revelled in the spotlight at home, where throngs of supporters turn out to hear him speak, as well as on tours abroad, where he is cheered by overseas Indians.

Initial results on Sunday morning showed Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trailing far behind a grand alliance led by the incumbent chief minister of the large eastern state of Bihar.
