Modi leads Yoga Day celebration

Update : 21 Jun 2015, 04:54 AM

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has performed Yoga along with thousands of people at a mass event in New Delhi's ceremonial avenue to mark International Yoga Day.

Modi's participation was part of his international drive to increase participation in the ancient practice.

Thousands of colourful mats were laid out on Rajpath where the main event was held, NDTV reported.

"Yoga is an everyday part of life. Yoga is not just for contorting your body into shapes. If that were true, people working in the circus would be called yogis," Modi said.

Earlier in the morning, Modi tweeted: "Greetings to people around the world on 1st International Day of Yoga! Lets pledge to make Yoga an integral part of our daily lives."

Quoting Indian authorities, BBC reported that 35,000 people attended the 35-minute yoga session, aimed at setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest yoga class at a single venue.

Guinness officials said they would announce the results in a few hours.

The United Nations declared June 21 the first International Day of Yoga after adopting a measure proposed by the Modi government.

Modi used his first speech at the UN General Assembly in September to call for such a day to be recognised.
